Moving soon? Congrats! A change of place and scenery means a fresh start, and that’s always good for the mind, body, and soul. That’s why we’ve assembled this handy list of things to do before you move to a new place. Let’s make your next step easy, and dare we say it … enjoyable!
1| Assemble your checklist
Yes, you already found the key to step one. Print this out or create a living, breathing document in a program like Google Docs to customize your list and keep track of important links, notes, and documents.
2| Take measurements
Will your piano fit through the new home’s door? Is your couch too small for the new living room? When you take measurements and keep them with you, moving and rearranging furniture, as well as shopping for new items, is much easier.
3| Find a good moving company
Figure out how much help you’ll need with moving and what your budget is before you start researching companies. Ask your friends and family for recommendations in addition to searching the web.
4| Pack smart
There are tons of packing advice articles out there, but here’s a few tips we will always use:
Take photos of each box before you close it. Use a smartphone image editor to add a number to the photo that corresponds with the number written on each box. That way, you’ll always have an idea of what’s in each box when you need to find items while unpacking.
Wrap garbage bags around your clothes. Taking things off hangers, just to pack them in boxes and rehang them at the new place is a waste of time. Simply pull a garbage bag over five to ten shirts and tie the bag ties over the top of the hangers.
Keep a moving survival kit. Have a bag or box handy at all times with essentials like your wallet, keys, phone, phone charger, medications, basic toiletries (toilet paper!), and essential documents. We also suggest putting permanent markers, packing tape, and scissors in that bag so you have backup supplies as you pack.

5| Contact your utility providers
Arrange for your current services to be canceled or transferred to your new address so you don’t have interrupted internet. Nobody likes being without Wi-Fi!
6| Change your address
Get your mail forwarded with the post office.
7| Arrange for pet and child care
It’s best to keep pets and kiddos out of the way on moving day, so it’s time to call on your favorite sitters!
